Understanding the Summer Slide and Its Impact on Your Child's Learning

Updated: 3 days ago

What is Summer Slide?

Summer slide can be defined as a decline in students’ reading skills over summer vacation. Just like sports, if you don't practice, you can't get better.

On average, students read only about 10 minutes per day outside of school (Anderson, Wilson, & Fielding, 1988), which means they might not spend much time reading this summer. The impact on student learning becomes visible in September when students are expected to read new grade-level material, yet they have not practiced reading since June.

Importance of Tutoring and Continuing Learning

This is why tutoring can be so helpful! Even if your child is not struggling with reading, providing opportunities to read and work on literacy skills will help maintain their abilities and foster a love of reading, ensuring they are prepared for the next school year.

By incorporating these practices, you can help your child avoid the summer slide and start the new school year strong.
